Yankee Candle - Q1 2014 - New Fragrances

New Year new Yankee Candle fragrances for Q1.  This selection are very definitely looking forward to warmer weather and holidays, I think, that or distracting ourselves from the cold UK weather by dreaming of far off parts.  There are 3 floral scents and two mixed 'scene setting' sort of scents in the collection this time.

First up, Champaca Blossom: The rare beauty and joyful spirit of enchanting champaca blossoms come to life in this captivating fruity floral nectar.

Second of the floral scents is Lovely Kiku; The flower of happiness the elegant, rejuvenating perfume of chrysanthemum blossom and warm vanilla.

The final floral is Pink Hibiscus; Bright and beautiful the effervescent, slightly citrus bouquet of delicate tropical hibiscus petals is always inviting.

Next up is Under The Palms, I'm really excited to try this one out; Imagine yourself in a hammock or stretched out on an oversized beach towel. Palm trees swaying gently above you, providing a relaxing respite from the sun. The sky the most beautiful shade of blue. This fragrance is like that cool, refreshing shade . . . a lush, green scent of sea grass, palm leaves, and island coconut.

Finally another scent I am looking forward to trying the previously US only scent of Midnight Oasis; Across quiet sands, a midnight breeze mixes with island citrus and warm sandalwood.

I'm looking forward to trying all of these although it will be hard to leave the warm, cosy, foody scents of winter that I am burning just now behind while it's still so cold outside!

Yankee Candles New Q3 Fragrances 2013

It's that time again, new quarterly fragrance releases from Yankee Candles.  I have to say I wasn't blown away by the selection this time but I was very keen on trying Salted Caramel and I wanted to give the others a go and see what they were like so I picked up a wax tart of each scent.

First up, what Yankee have to say about them:

November Rain
A quiet interlude of the season is reflected in this airy, refreshing mix of watery leaf notes, warm amber and crisp, brisk air.

Lake Sunset
The serene beauty of the sun's golden rays as they dip into still blue waters, calling to mind the musky descent of nightfall.

Vanilla Chai
It's the perfect accompaniment to me time, a superbly satisfyingly rich and spicy recipe of ginger, cinnamon and vanilla.

Salted Caramel
Sweet surrender is your with our luscious gourmand confection of burnt sugar, sea salt, and smooth vanilla caramel.

As predicted I LOVE Salted Caramel, it's rich and sweet and perfectly caramel-ly scented, no great surprise that I love it since the majority of my favourite Yankee scents are the super sweet gourmand ones like Christmas Cupcake and Red Velvet.

November Rain is ok, I think it's unlikely I would repurchase it, there are definite hints of air freshener about it to me and I don't think it's the sort of scent I want my home filled with although it isn't unpleasant.  Lake Sunset is nice enough and could grow on me but so far it's a bit lack lustre and not really blowing me away, it's another fresh scent which isn't bad but also isn't anything special.

Vanilla Chai was the one I was most curious about, I love ginger and I love vanilla but I really dislike cinnamon, I've never bought any of the Yankee fragrances that include cinnamon, this time I decided to give it a go hoping the ginger and vanilla might drown it out.  Sadly for me they don't, unlit I can smell the vanilla (and cloves and cardamon) but once it was lit this one was all cinnamon to my nose and very strong cinnamon at that.  It does have an amazing fragrance throw though, so if you like cinnamon then this is one for you.

Yankee Candles Q2 2013

Recently I decided to try out the new Q2 fragrances from Yankee Candles.  This quarter there are 4 news scents; Fireside, Summer Scoop, Honey Blossom and Pineapple Cilantro.

I was pretty excited when I read about the new fragrances, particularly as Pineapple Cilantro was one of the scents I had my partner's mum send over from America at Christmas and was previously unavailable in the UK.  Fireside also appealed as I was hoping for a warm, toasted marshmallow sort of scent.

My photos are only of 3 of the 3 fragrances as there seems to be a bit of a stock issue with the Pineapple Cilantro tarts at the moment.

First up, Fireside, I am SO disappointed with this scent. :( It's the weakest of any Yankee tarts I have ever tried and unless you hang your head directly over the burner when it's lit there is practically no fragrance at all.  Even then there is only a vague hint at sweet marshmallow.

Yankee says: The joys of camp ... mesmerised by the fire, singing and laughing, while toasting marshmallow to rich, gooey perfection.
Now, I've never been to 'camp' but I'm pretty sure it doesn't smell of the nothingness that the Fireside tart did, such a disappointment, especially since I imagined this being one of my favourites of the collection.

Next is Summer Scoop; Delicious memories of creamy, homemade strawberry ice cream on a hot summer day. One scoop or two?  It's pretty much as described, sweet, sugary strawberry with a hint of creaminess about it.  Probably not everyone's cup of tea as it is SWEET but I quite like it.  It's definitely a fake strawberry scent rather than that of a fresh strawberry.

Honey Blossom: The beautiful blend of flower nectar, honey musk, freesia and woods makes this both full and delicate.  This tart was the surprise of the collection for me, I wasn't expecting to like it as much as I do.  I'm not always a huge floral fan when it comes to tart fragrances but this one is tempered with a sugary sweet honey note which makes it a bit different.  I'm surprised by how much I like this summery floral.

Finally, Pineapple Cilantro; A tropical treat ... fresh, island pineapple served with a citrus touch of cilantro and sweet coconut.  As I mentioned I am basing this on the tart I had sent over from the US as Glasgow seems to have been missed off of Yankee's tart delivery list for this fragrance so far.

I really like this scent, it's bright and fresh and very obviously pineapple,  don't get much of the cilantro (which is maybe just as well, I'm not a massive fan) but the sweet pineapple is lovely and this is a great juicy, fruity summer scent which I will definitely be buying more of when they eventually turn up.

Have you tried any of the new Yankee Q2 fragrance yet?  What do you think?

Kringle Again

I posted about Kringle a little while back and I was so impressed with their speedy delivery and fantastic scents that I couldn't resist putting in another order when they had their wax potpourri on special offer.  This time I added a couple of fragrances I had tried previously; fresh mint and vanilla mint and a selection of new scents to try.

The new scents are plum, french lavender, baker's vanilla, cortland apple, raspberry jam, maple sugar, vanilla lavender, mango and creme brulee.

So far I have tried Mango which is a gorgeous strong fruity scent, it's quite one dimensional in that it does really just smell like mango but it's lovely and fresh and the wax potpourri has a great throw which really filled the whole room.

The other scent I have tried is Creme Brulee, this one is fantastic and I will definitely be ordering it again, it's a soft sweet caramel scent which is so warm and comforting.  I absolutely love it!

So all in all another successful haul from Kringle, now I just need to get on with using some of these and my Yankee collection up so I can buy more new scents to try. :D

Kringle Candle Company

Today I have another (yes, I know, obsessive much?!) post about scented candles (or scented wax potpourri to be more exact) this time from Kringle Candle Company.  I found a link to Kringle via Facebook while on a page for a company that sells Yankee Candles, being rather keen on the Yankee tarts at the moment I had to go and have a look at what was being touted as one of their biggest competitors.

The people who run Kringle Candles used to run one of the sites which sells Yankee Candles so I was quite keen to see the product that had made them change to supplying a different product.  In turn it seems that Kringle Candles are run by the family who initially set up Yankee Candles years ago (you can read all about it on their site if you are interested).

After having a quick look round the site I decided I was going to have to try out a few of their wax potpurri, not least because they have two of my holy grail scents (pineapple and mint) which Yankee don't ship to the UK!  They also had an offer on where you get 20% off the fragrances that they are retiring soon.

I ordered on Monday morning and my packaged arrived first thing Tuesday, the next day, which is great service especially considering the P&P was only £2.50 (it's free delivery if you spend over £30).  It was packaged well in a nice box which kept the potpourri well protected on it's travels:

Inside were my selection of wax potpourri, Kringle's answer to Yankee's wax tarts.

They also enclosed a leaflet with details of the company and descriptions of all the different sizes of candles they do which I thought was a nice touch.

From the soon to be retiring fragrances I picked 7 to try.  Bartlett Pear, Honeydew Melon, Strawberry, Peppermint Twist, Ruby Red Punch, Vanilla Mint and Frosted Cake:

Additionally, I had to try out their Fresh Mint and their Coconut Pineapple as I mentioned above.  I also added in a Hot Chocolate as I have been looking for a chocolate scent that wasn't fake and overly sweet, I thought I'd give this one a go too.

The wax potpourri is really nicely and simply packaged; shrink wrapped in plastic with a different sticker on top depending on the fragrance.  All Kringle candles are white so the stickers are the only difference look wise on the products.

Even in their wrappers they smell fantastic, the problem was definitely which one to burn first!  I decided on Peppermint Twist which is described as Those classic red-and-white swirled candies have always created a frosty mint sensation on the tongue. Peppermint Twist fills the air with that same tangy goodness.  And they're right, this one smells exactly like candy canes when burned, fresh, cool and sweet without being sickening.  It's quite an uplifitng fragrance and is one I will probably burn during the day when I want to feel a bit more active and revived.

Next up I tried Bartlett Pear which is The distinctive juicy aroma of a newly-sliced orchard pear is front and center. With cool green base notes matched by nectar-like top notes, this fragrance honors the real fruit handsomely.  This one is also lovely, and does smell exactly like a lovely juicy pear, not at all synthetic and very fresh and delicious.  Some other fruit scents that I've tried previously can be very synthetic and clawing but this wasn't at all, the green base notes mentioned really do give it a lovely crisp note on top of the fruit.

The throw of the fragrance is good too, I used a little under half of a wax potpourri each time and they made my fairly large sized living room smell beautiful and strong enough that you could really smell it rather than just having a background scent.  I think a whole one one would have been a bit overpowering in a single room.

Price wise these were £1.40 each, so a little more expensive than Yankee, there are other breakable ones which are £1.80, which are definitely a good idea as the regular ones are hard to break without tools and brute force!  I'm not sure I would pay an extra 40p per item just to have them easily break though, I think I'll continue to just bash at them with scissors.

As regular readers will know I am a big fan of Yankee Candles and I use a lot of their wax tarts which are essentially a very similar product, being such a Yankee fan I wasn't sure that Kringle could compete but so far they really have done, I was delighted with the speed of delivery and the initial quality of the products and the wax potpourri I have used so far has only built on that positive first impression.  Another plus point is that Kringle's Facebook page seems to be very active and monitored by the people behind the company so people do get answers if they post on there which I always think is a big plus for any company.

I have a whole load of Yankee tarts to use up but from now on there will definitely be two options to look at when I am buying home fragrance, and currently Kringle are just out in front, mainly down to their speedy delivery and the gorgeous scents.  Having mint and coconut AND chocolate scents avaliable has definitely pleased me.  I can't wait to try some more and possibly a candle or two as well, just to see what they're like, obviously. ;)

Have you tried Kringle Candles yet?  What do you think?

Yankee Tart Stash...

It seems it's not just nail varnishes that I like to hoard, I mean collect. ;)  I'm going to need another Helmer for my Yankee tarts at this rate...

Last night I decided to have a quick hunt through all my Yankee tarts and organise them a bit better so I can use them all up and try out all the ones I got over Christmas and when the new Q1 fragrances were released, it seems I have quite a job ahead of me...

I should probably start working my way through some of the multiples soon...

Here's a list of all the fragrances I have currently:

Apple and Pine Needle, Baby Powder, Beach Wood, Black Coconut, Caramel Pecan Pie, Cherries On Snow, Christmas At The Beach, Christmas Rose, Coastal Waters, Cranberry Ice, Drift Away, Eucalyptus, Fresh Mint, Happy Christmas, Holiday Sage, Honey and Spice , MacIntosh, Mango, Peach Salsa, Mountain Lodge, Napa Valley Sun, Ocean Blossom, Patchouli, Peppermint Bark, Pineapple Cilantro, River Valley, Snow In Love , Sugared Apple, Sun and Sand , Treehouse, Memories, Winter Wonderland, A Childs Wish, Beach Walk, Blissful Autumn , Christmas Cookie, Paradise Spice, Red Velvet , Turquoise Sky, Waikiki Melon, True Rose, Bahama Breeze , Vineyard and Christmas Cupcake!

I'm hoping that by the time Q2 is released at the start of the summer I'll have worked my way through most of them, in the meantime let me know if there are any you think I really have to try. :)

New Q1 Yankee Tarts

There are few things that make a work day more pleasing than something like this arriving in the post for you, as well as being jam packed full of lovely tarts the box smelled amazing, so it was lovely to have on my desk all day too.  Suffice to say it cheered me right up.

The new Q1 fragrances have just been released by Yankee so I decided to make an order to try them out and also to stock up on some other bits and pieces I needed (need is a very subjective thing ;) these might have been more 'wants' than needs), including my bathroom staple Bahama Breeze while it was 25% off.

First off the new Q1 fragrances; Turquoise Sky, A Child's Wish, Paradise Spice, Black Coconut and Waikiki Melon. These came as part of a sampler pack which makes each tart just 87p, you can't not try the new scents for that price!

I can't wait to try them out, they all sound exactly like fragrances I would love and they're perfect for heading into spring with lots of fresh, fruity scents.  I am slightly hesitant about Paradise Spice as I don't like banana or cinnamon scented things but I had a quick sniff of a candle as I was passing a Yankee stall the other day and it actually seems rather lovely so I have pretty high hopes for the whole collection.

Here's my whole order laid out:

Not just one of each though, that would have been far too reserved...

As I said Bahama Breeze is a staple scent in my bathroom so I had to stock up on it while it was on offer, True Rose was also discounted and is another I love and then a couple of the soon to be gone Christmas Cupcake which are seasonal Christmas tarts but I love to burn all year round.

I also decided to try out some new tarts so the rest are a mix of scents I've never had before and wanted to try.

And finally, as a bonus I was sent a free Cherries on Snow sampler as I spent over £20, I've had a tart of the same fragrance before so I was quite pleased to receive a scent I knew I liked.

My stock of tarts is rather hug now so I think I'll be able to lay off ordering anymore until the next release of fragrances (Q2) in the summer, well, maybe... ;)

What are your favourite Yankee scents?

US Yankee Tarts

I was very lucky that my lovely boyfriend's equally lovely parents sent me a little package of US goodies over as a treat for Christmas, included in the package were some US Yankee Tarts, all fragrances which aren't available in the UK.  I am so excited to try them out!

So far I've burned Fireside which is a lovely woody, herby scent with hints of firewood and smoke about it - nice smoke though, not just regular smoke!  It's quite a masculine fragrance but it was perfect for a cosy evening in.  I'm hesitant to use them too quickly though as I know I can't get anymore easily, silly I know but I don't want to waste their deliciousness!

Apparently there are some places which sell the US only scents in the UK but I am yet to track any of them down, so if you know of anywhere that sells the harder to find, US released scents please comment below, otherwise I'll have to start pestering my almost MIL to go shopping for me again!

Yankee Christmas & Winter Tarts

It's probably a little too early for this post, but I have been enjoying burning my Yankee Christmas and winter scents so much that I wanted to post and let others know how many lovely scents there were this year.

I have 7 of the Festive scents so far, 4 from the Q4 release (Yankee do 4 releases each year compromising of 4 or 5 new fragrances, generally Q4 is the one with the Christmas and Winter scents in) and 3 additional Christmas scents I picked up from my local stockist when I saw they had them in.

First, the Q4 tarts:
None of these really scream Christmas to me but they are definitely winter themed.

Snow In Love:
Fall In Love with this delightful blend of creamy, comforting woods and wintry powder freshness.

Cranberry Ice:
Refreshingly tart and sweet, A cool, stimulating rush of frosty red fruits bursting with a tangy sweetness.

Sugared Apple:
A deliciously sweet apple treat ... a perfect recipe of juicy apples sprinkled with sugar and vanilla.

Apple & Pine Needle:
Popular pine gets a fruity twist as crisp apple notes are combined with pine needle, cypress and cedar wood.

Overall, I was really pleased with these tarts, I bought them online as a set and hadn't smelled any of them before they arrived which was rather risky but worked out well on this occasion.  They definitely smell like their descriptions and they're all perfectly suited to winter and colder weather.

Snow in Love and Sugared Apple are both very warm, soft scents perfect for a snuggly evening on the sofa whereas Cranberry Ice is very zingy and fresh and perfect for perking you up on cold, dull days.  Apple and Pine Needle was the one I was most concerned about as I feel like pine can tend towards a toilet sort of smell if it's not done right but this one is done right, the apple really comes through and it's a fresh, clean scent which is really pleasant to burn.

There is also a fifth scent in the Q4 release, White Christmas, which I have yet to try.

Then the additional tarts I picked up which are definitely Christmas themed in their names and wrapping.

Christmas Eve:
Traditional holiday scents of a warm hearth, sugared plums, and candied fruits.

Happy Christmas:
Glad tidings of Christmas joy come wrapped in the happy scent of Christmas pines and festive fruits.

Christmas Cookie:
Buttery rich, vanilla scented, holiday sugar cookies.

I was quite surprised by Christmas Eve and Happy Christmas as they are both definite fresh, fruity scents which is not what I would immediatly link to Christmas, but that's a definite plus for me as I am not a big fan of many of the more spicy festive scents, I really dislike cinammon which means a lot of the usual festive tarts are off limits to me so it makes a lovely change to have fruity ones.

Christmas Cookie is an old favourite of mine, I have a candle too which I burn at the same time as my tarts in a different room so the scent wafts all through the flat.  I love it, it's sugary and warm and absolutely delicious, perfect for cold weather.  I'm tempted to stock up on a big batch of these to see me through until next Christmas!

Here's my sub-standard picture of my most recent festive haul.

I also want to try out Christmas Cupcake: An irresistible treat ... rich, moist vanilla cupcake covered with sweet buttery holiday icing.  I imagine it'll be similar to Christmas Cookie and probably the other cupcake scents Yankee have done in the past.

Have you started buying and burning your Christmas scents yet?  Which ones are your favourites?  Am I missing out on any you think I should try?

Yankee.co.uk - Order & Review

I thought since I had included my review of the rather poor service and pricing I got from Busy Bee Candles I should also include one for a similar order I placed with Yankee.co.uk.

For a start, the pricing was much better.  I made a slightly larger order this time (20 tarts / £23.29) which meant that each tart worked out at £1.16 each, including P&P, far better than Busy Bees £1.30 per tart including P&P AFTER a 20% discount.

I placed the order at around 3pm on Monday afternoon, received an email to say it had been dispatched late Tuesday afternoon and the parcel was with me in Wednesday morning's post which I was really pleased with, super fast delivery.

The packaging was, again, not what I expected.  It too arrived in a padded envelope and bubble wrap rather than a box, this time however the tarts were wrapped snugly and all of them arrived in one piece with no breaks or bashes.

I ordered a 10 pack of Vineyard tarts, a fragrance I had previously had in a sampler candle and loved, they smell exactly like grape candy from America; 2 True Rose, another scent I have had previously and loved, these ones smell exactly like roses still on the bush, and a selection of other tarts I had either smelled in store previously or really liked the sound of.  The smell from the envelope when I opened it was heavenly, not a hint of synthetic horribleness just fresh, fruity deliciousness.

Based on previous experience of Yankee Candle tarts I can't wait to burn these, any I have had before have had lovely strong fragrances which I can burn for at least 2 evenings before having to change them.  The whole flat ends up beautifully scented and still smells great the following morning.

So, all in, a much better, cheaper, quicker shopping experience and one I will definitely be repeating in future.

My only complaint, which is directed at Yankee Candles and not Yankee.co.uk is that I am desperate to try some of the US scents and they're not all available in the UK, I've made a list though and plan to track them down somehow, particularly Coconut Bay and Fresh Mint since I really want a proper wild garden mint smell and a real, non synthetic, coconut fragrance.

Here's my current US wishlist:

Let's hope Yankee UK starts importing them soon or I am going to have to find a tart mule to smuggle them into the country for me!

Busy Bee Candles

Something a little different, and not beauty related, today...

I am a bit addicted to scented candles, I love Yankee Candles but I find the larger ones can be quite expensive and I tend to get bored of the same scent if I have it burning for too long, so, rather than bankrupt myself buying lots of the larger type to swap between I decided to try some wax tarts.  Lots of companies seem to do them now and since they are usually just over a pound for each tart they are a budget friendly way to try out different scents.

I recently invested in a burner and a couple of Yankee tarts to try out.  Safe to say I have found a new obsession and now I want a burner in every room.

As well as my favoured Yankees I thought I would try some from a few different companies to see how they compared.  My first choice was Busy Bee Candles.  I'd read a few good reviews and heard from friends that they were decent quality so, armed with a 20% discount code I decided to check them out.
The site is nice enough and they have a lot of different fragrances to choose from, the prices were very similar to Yankee's - so fairly high, particularly for a less well known brand, but based on what I'd heard and read I decided to go ahead and order.

Here's what I chose:

Postage is expensive, it cost me £3.99 to have 11 tarts posted.  They arrived in a padded envelope with some bubble wrap around groups of the tarts, out of the 11 there were 6 damaged.  Although it doesn't make much difference when using them in a tart burner whether they are in one piece or not it does mean that they were only suitable for personal use, they were far too crushed to give as gifts for example.  For £3.99 PP I expected them to come in a box or at least arrive in one piece.  They took 5 days to arrive.

The tarts themselves are a bit smaller than their Yankee counterparts which is disappointing since they are 10p more expensive per tart.

Due to their condition when they arrived I decided to email Busy Bee and see what they said.  Basically they weren't interested, they claimed they knew the packaging wasn't adequate, had previously heard of breakages from customers and accepted no responsibility once they'd handed them to Royal Mail.

They offered to refund me if I sent them back the order but since I didn't fancy a trip to the post office and having to pay for them to be returned I turned down the offer.  Although it says on their site if you send them a photo of the damaged items they will organise a refund this isn't the case in reality, as despite my sending them a picture they didn't offer me even a partial refund for the damaged goods, all in I felt the reply I got from them was very poor.  Customer service is obviously something they are not particularly worried about.

On opening the parcel from Busy Bee I wasn't overly blown away with the fragrances either, obviously it's a very personal thing but several of the tarts smell synthetic and fake (Pineapple Zing, Creme Brulee, Coconut Beach, Butter Popcorn & Pina Colada) and a couple have a definite whiff of cheap air freshener and public toilets about them (Palm Tree & Coconut Beach). Midnight  Peppermint, Herb Garden, Sun Kissed Raspberry, Cotton Candy & Chocolate Brownie all smell fairly good (although all of them smell quite synthetic, and obviously until they are burning it's hard to say exactly how their fragrances will be but when I lit them it didn't get much better.

The synthetic smell which I had noticed while the tarts were wrapped carried through to the scent they gave off when lit.  So far none have been offensive but none have made me keen to repurchase or light them again.  I don't know whether it is due to them being a different sort of wax or what but there is a scent that runs through them all.

Palm Tree - Ok, reasonably fresh but with a definite synthetic smell though it, better than I was expecting from how it seemed in its packaging (air freshener and toilets).
Sun kissed Raspberry - Fruity, pleasant enough but again a slight synthetic undertone.
Midnight peppermint - Strong, minty, like chewing gum not natural garden mint.
Candy Floss - Very subtle, sweet smelling, synthetic, and generally a bit nothing-y, definitely not the scent I had hoped for.

All in, with 20% discount, my order from Busy Bees came to £14.30, for £11 I could have hand picked 10 Yankee Tarts from my local supplier and had them immediately or ordered from a well know Yankee supplier online and had 11 of them (incl postage costs) delivered for a similar price.   In future I will definitely stick to doing that.

Scent is a very personal thing and many of the tarts I chose and bought un-sniffed over the internet smell nothing like I had thought or hoped and for that reason, along with the poor yet expensive packaging and sub-standard customer service, I will probably stick to choosing and buying in person from now on, and I'll also probably stick to Yankee Candles, there might be a reason why they are the best sellers in the candle and tart market!

A little update.  Today - 5 days after I received the email from Busy Bees and my reply to them went unanswered - a parcel arrived, in it were 3 Busy Bee tarts.

They were not replacements of the damaged tarts I had sent a picture of so I can only assume, due to a lack of further emails or note in the package, that they were some sort of sorry or goodwill gesture, which is a nice idea, but in all honesty a more polite initial email or indeed a reply to my second email would have gone down better.  Either they felt they were in the right and there was no need to send me anything or they know their service was below par and they should have said so initially.

On the plus side, this package smells better, so maybe it was my poor choice of tarts that made the first lot smell unappealing and like freshly sprayed public loos.  Sweet Dreams smells wonderful and what I had hoped Midnight Peppermint would smell of so I am actually quite looking forward to trying that one.
